Once-Forbidden Video Games From Communist Czechoslovakia are now PlayableDuring the late 80s to early 90s, teenagers living under oppression in Communist Soviet countries developed and released their own video games and arcade cabinets. Now, a Slovakia-based project, a collaboration between the Slovak Game Developers Association and the Slovak Design Museum, is making these games available to play in the English language. In the late Soviet Communism era, Western inventions, art, and movies seeped through the Communist countries’ borders through underground sources. Even computers made their way in too. Using these, young people in the Soviet Union began making games and sharing them amongst friends. With limited knowledge, the best they could do was text-based adventure that could be programmed using Basic language. In Czechoslovakia, they created hundreds of such games with heroes inspired by Western pop culture. One notable example is a game where Soviet officers hunt down Rambo. The project is ongoing and more games to be translated over the next 2-3 years, with emphasis on the text adventure games.#videogame #Communism #Soviet #Czechoslovakia #TextBasedAdventure #Slovakia
The Oculus Quest Gets A Free UpgradeThe Oculus Quest 2 has been out since October, and it is a great entry into the the exciting new world of VR. But for what seems like the first time ever, a tech product gets upgraded with no change in cost. Starting today, the Oculus Quest 2 base model gets double the storage, from 64 to 128 gigabytes. It seems that Facebook is trying to entice more users to get into the standalone headset. They could have just created a mid-tier instead of the free upgrade, but they may not want to create confusion in the market with three seemingly identical models being one hundred dollars apart. The Quest has been facing issues recently, with facial interfaces needing to be replaced and it still requiring Facebook accounts. This is finally good news for Quest fans, as new users can get even more games for their headsets.Image credit: Facebook#oculus #quest2 #oculusquest2 #facebook #upgrade #vr #videogame

The Lawn Mowing Simulator Game It looks like Skyhook Games and Curve Digital has come up with some cutting-hedge game play. The developer created the ultimate dad game when it launched the Lawn Mowing Simulator on August 10, 2021.The Lawn Mowing Simulator allows players to choose from a variety of snappy ride on lawn mowers. Lawn mowers include those from: Toro, SCAG, and STIGA. There are currently 12 lawn mowers available in the base game. Mow-tivated players can next spend hours upon hours mowing a beautiful and expansive virtual English countryside. That means speeding along residential lawns, cleaning up cottage greens, and maintaining equestrian fields. You can finally be a international groundskeeper without leaving the comfort of your favorite gaming chair. #landscape #lawn #mow #home #gardening #maintenance #grass #simulator #videogame #skyhookgames
Meet the Playdate: A Monochrome Video Game Console With a CrankThe Playdate is a handheld video game console that just went up for preorder this year, but the design might make you think that it released in 1989.The hardware has it's quirks, including a crank on the side for potential gameplay mechanics (fishing, maybe?) and a tiny amount of RAM (1/1000 the amount on the Steam Deck at 16 Megabytes). The way that games are played on the Playdate is unusual too. According to the website, games are released once each week, with two each "New Game Day". You can still sideload games, though. Developers will probably have fun making games that fit within the limitations of the platform. The price may seem steep for a limited console though, at $170 for preorders. But who knows, this may enter a new type of console into the market and allow small developers such as Panic! (the creators of the Playdate) to get into hardware.Image Credit: Panic!#console #playdate #videogame #panic #retro
