The first-person shooter Borderlands debuted in 2009, and is now a series of six games. The space Western setting is a universe so ripe for cinema that Lionsgate made it happen. Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and several other notable names. With a cast like that and a budget of $100 million, it's gotta be good, right?
On the one hand, it's got some great action scenes. On the other hand, it's possible we've seen them all in the trailer. On the third hand, it's great to see Cate Blanchett show off in an action role. Then there's the question of the story. The writers took the easy way out and made it a quest to rescue a kidnapped girl, which is a road we've trod too many times and presents no ethical ambiguity. But if the action lives up to the games and the jokes are adequate, the story means nothing. At any rate, we'll have to wait to find out.
