Sure, it looks like a vintage cartoon, but this is a game trailer. If you like the retro aesthetic of Cuphead, you're going to love the first person shooter Mouse from Fumi Games. Rendered in black and white rubber hose animation, the game is set in the noir world of the 1930s, where you shoot anthropomorphic mice. Anthropomorphic mice? In rubber hose animation? Isn't that Steamboat Willie, also known as Mickey Mouse? Why yes it is. And it's a sign of things to come that Disney hasn't come down hard on this trailer.
Mickey Mouse officially enters the public domain on January first, 2024. Disney has kept the copyright to the cartoon mouse for 95 years. That copyright should have ended 40 years ago, but Disney lobbied for 20-year extensions twice, and won. But despite their efforts, there has been no extension of the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. So Steamboat Willie will be fair games in a couple of weeks, while the more recent versions of Mickey will still be under the Disney trademark. Be that as it may, Mouse won't be available until 2025. -via Digg ā
