The First Video Game to Win a Hugo Award

People have argued for years about whether video games are art. Yes, they are. More recently, some would even say video games are literature. They certainly display qualifications the category. And games have now taken one step toward recognition as literature.

The Hugo Awards are annual prizes given for science fiction and fantasy literature. For the first time ever, the 2021 awards included a category for video games. The nominees were Spiritfarer, The Last of Us 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Blaseball, and Hades. The awards were announced Saturday, and Hades received the Hugo. The game based on Greek mythology is now the first-ever video game with a Hugo Award -or any literary award. The Creative Director of Hades producer Supergiant Games, Greg Kasvin, Tweeted his reaction.

After several years of discussion, the Best Video Game category was created for the Hugos as a one-off category this year. That doesn't mean it won't return in the future, if there are enough video games that qualify. -via Kotaku ā€‹
