How Nintendo Turned Zelda into an Open-World Game

When Nintendo created The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, they had a massive challenge in converting the classic Legend of Zelda into an open-world game. It took five years of research and development! And the Nintendo developers talked about their process at a game conference in 2017. But that discussion was in Japanese, and was eventually scrubbed from the internet. Now Mark Brown of Game Maker's Toolkit has recreated that information from widely-varying sources to give us some idea of the challenges and the process for overcoming them. They made it work, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a massive hit. We can only hope that the new game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, set for release this weekend, is just as engaging.
